We have a variety of departments that may offer internship opportunities in engineering, information technology, library, human resources, business, communications & media relations, as well as finance. Tasks may include working on projects, assisting with day-to-day operations, as well as attending meetings. Our interns often have the opportunity to go on site visits and meet with various stakeholders to learn how the City serves our citizens and tourists.

Therapeutic Recreation Programs & Inclusion Services Internship:

The Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Department is looking for a Therapeutic Recreation Programs & Inclusion Services Intern. The goal is to provide students who are majoring in the field of Therapeutic Recreation and seeking the certification from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom; to fulfill their school's requirement to obtain a degree and to meet NCTRC's certification requirements.

Required Education: Candidates pursuing a Therapeutic Recreation (BS in Therapeutic Recreation, or Recreation with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation); Must be eligible to sit for National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) upon completion of internship and degree confirmation.

Required Attachments: Cover Letter, Resume, Transcript, List of Strength & Growth Areas as they would apply to internship & List of Goals and Objectives for internship experience.

Duties:
  • Working under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) for the duration of their internship to learn the aspects of developing, implementing, and evaluating skill development and therapy based therapeutic recreation programs.
  • Supervising participants (youth or adult) involved in program and events, adhering to program and event safety protocols.
  • Completing short term and/or long-term projects and case studies, depending upon current standing in school. (Senior Intern - short-term project, long-term project, and case student; Graduate Level Intern - long-term research/administrative project and case study).
  • Providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers both written and orally.
  • Preparing and/or submitting records and reports that are programmatic and administrative.
  • May be required to work varied hours evenings, nights, holidays, and weekend in an outdoor environment in various weather conditions and for extended periods of time greater than 8 hours.

Expected Duration & Schedule: Candidates typical work week will be 40 hours unless otherwise agreed upon. The schedule will be varied by days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and program schedule needs. Budget and Policy Analyst Internship:

The City of Virginia Beach department of Budget & Management Services is responsible for the City's budget which provides funding for major construction projects, including projects for building new facilities, improving our transit system, maintaining our roads and parks, purchasing major equipment, and more. Our Budget and Management Services department is in search of a detail oriented student with exceptional analytical skills for their Budget and Policy Analyst Internship.

Education: Master's in Public Administration or Master's in Economics preferred but undergraduate degrees will also be considered.

Duties:

  • Assisting in departmental budgets.
  • Reviewing and analyzing the fiscal impact of new and redevelopment projects.
  • Research and evaluation of policies and alternatives.

  • Assisting in providing recommendations on revenue.

Planning and Zoning Internship:

The Virginia Beach Planning and Community Development department protects and preserves the welfare of residents and visitors by upholding codes, policies, and regulations in all functions of community design and development. Our Zoning Administration division within this department is in search of a Planning and Zoning intern. The Zoning division oversees regulations of the use of the land and the placement of structures on the land.

Required Education: Candidates seeking a degree, preferably a junior or above with specific course of study. Any major will be considered; however, students seeking a degree in Planning, Design, Public Administration, Political Science or similar would benefit most from this internship.

Duties:

  • Assist in the daily operations of the Zoning division including responding to inquiries via phone and email and assisting the zoning inspectors with customer service at the zoning counter.
  • Assist in site plan reviews for residential construction to ensure compliance with zoning ordinance requirements.
  • Assist with site inspections and enforcement of zoning complaints, including the Oceanfront Resort District's Form Based Code.
  • Research zoning history for items being considered by the Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals.
  • Attend Board of Zoning Appeals and Planning Commission hearings.
  • Assist in record retention and file management. Assist in digitizing historic files, records, and maps.
  • Assist in the creation of location maps using ArcGIS and/or other applicable software.
  • Assist in updating zoning forms, guides, and online material.

Mosquito Control Biologist Aid /Assistant Internship:

The City of Virginia Beach Mosquito Control is in search of three Mosquito Control Biology Aid Interns for the Summer of 2025. Summer Workers will work directly with the mosquito control biologist and her assistant to survey adult mosquito populations and perform mosquito-borne disease surveillance.

Required Education: Degree seeking student majoring in Entomology, Biology, Animal Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science or related field.

Required Attachments: Resume, Cover Letter, and Transcripts (unofficial will be accepted).

Duties:

  • Set-up, collections, and maintenance of various types of mosquito traps
  • Mosquito speciation and preparation of specimens for arboviral isolation
  • Collection and identification of mosquito eggs & larvae
  • Collection of blood samples from sentinel chicken flocks
  • Care and maintenance of the sentinel flocks and other related tasks.


Application Deadline: Friday, March 14, 2025. Interviews will be scheduled for qualified applicants in early April 2025.

Expected Duration & Schedule: Approximately May 1, 2025 - Oct. 9, 2025. We will try to accommodate fall 2025 academic schedules but ask that our interns commit for the entire mosquito season (through Oct. 9, 2025). Public Works Stormwater Engineering Internship:

The City of Virginia Beach Department of Public Works Internship Program is designed to recruit diverse college students majoring in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. The program provides viable full-time work experiences during the summer that assist students in making connections between textbook knowledge and real-world experiences.

Required Education: Degree seeking student majoring in an ABET accredited engineering, engineering technology, architecture, or construction management program.

Expected Schedule & Hours: Candidates will work a 40-hour internship between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday for approximately 12 weeks (May 12, 2025 - August 8, 2025).   • Updating stormwater models and model analysis.

Public Works Engineering & Construction Management Services / QAQC Internship:

Required Education: Degree seeking student majoring in an ABET accredited engineering, engineering technology, architecture, or construction management program.
