Field Assistant (PPM I - 1126) ID-8051

Description

This position will participate in data collection activities for a CDC-funded National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) research program designed to monitor the prevalence and trends of sexual and drug-use risk behaviors and HIV prevention utilization patterns. At pre-selected field locations, the study team will provide rapid HIV testing and administer 50-minute risk behavior interviews using hand-held computers. The target population for this cycle (2008) is men who have sex with men.

 

This position requires irregular hours of work, including afternoon, evening, night, and weekend shifts for venue-based recruitment and data collection.

This is a full time Term Limited Temporary position expected to last through December 31, 2008.

Examples of Duties

Assist in managing field site operations, coordinate preparation and transportation to field site; maintain a presence on site at all times; control flow of survey participants at venue locations; ensure staff safety; and ensure compliance with regulations for confidentiality of study participants and materials.

 

Oversee data collection procedures in the field, including recruitment of survey participants, eligibility screening, consent, and interviewing.

 

Oversee blood specimen collection for rapid HIV testing, ensuring compliance with protocol.

 

Oversee incentives and complete on-site study records and logs.

 

Assist in quality control, monitor and observe survey sessions, counseling and testing.

 

Conduct interviews and provide HIV counseling and rapid HIV testing on an as-needed basis.

 

Participate in ongoing assessment of venue productivity and field investigation for potential new venues.

 

Assist with preparing process indicator reports.

 

Participate in trainings and conference calls, as required.

 

The Field Assistant coordinates all activities with the Project Manager II (NHBS Project Coordinator/Field Supervisor).

Qualifications

Demonstrated prior experience in Public Health research and data collection, or similar.

 

Experience leading a project team in either a paid or volunteer capacity.

 

Demonstrated experience following complex protocols to conduct research or provide direct services in a medical, social service, or an educational setting; administering structured surveys used in research; working with men who have sex with men (MSM); and experience providing HIV counseling and/or testing.

 

Demonstrated knowledge of research methods, and HIV transmission and prevention.

 

Demonstrated excellent leadership skills and experience.

 

Demonstrated oral communication skills

 

Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic groups

 

Demonstrated experience working in the field or in non-clinical settings

 

Demonstrated ability to comply with strict protocols for confidentiality; strictly adhere to highly detailed procedures and protocols for data collection, reporting, record keeping, and quality control.

 

Demonstrated problem-solving skills.

 

A valid WA State Driver License or the ability to obtain one upon employment if offered this position.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

The selected candidate will be required to pass a thorough background investigation.

Employees are required to adhere to OSHA/WISHA guidelines including but not limited to completing their mandatory trainings on time and obtaining required immunizations.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all Public Health positions.

Public Health relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
